Dato Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar

KUCHING, Dec 5: Former defacto Law Minister Dato Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has clarified that he was not nominated to replace Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun as Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat.

According to a news report by Sinar Daily, several news portals have reported that Wan Junaidi, who is also the former Santubong Member of Parliament (MP), would be appointed as the Dewan Rakyat Speaker under Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government.

Additionally, speculation has also pointed to the former Speaker Tan Sri Mohammad Ariff Md Yusoff as the new Speaker. During the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration in 2018, Mohammad Ariff was appointed as the Speaker.

Sinar Daily reported that the deadline for informing the new Speaker of the appointment is Dec 5, before the parliamentary session begins on Dec 19.

Azhar Azizan confirmed on Friday (Dec 2) that he will step down as Speaker before the parliamentary session begins.

Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional (PN) is reportedly vying for the position of Dewan Rakyat Speaker.

According to Malay Mail, former deputy Speaker and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) supreme council member Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon has revealed that PN will send its proposed names for the position of Dewan Rakyat Speaker today.

However, the names of PN’s proposed candidates for Dewan Rakyat Speaker have not yet been disclosed. — DayakDaily
