KUCHING, Nov 7: The “Putri Santubong The Warrior Princess” musical drama will be staged at the Sarawak Cultural Village on Dec 11 and 12 to showcase Sarawak’s uniqueness to the world.

According to SCV Sdn Bhd general manager Jane Lian Labang, who is also the musical drama’s producer, The Legend Comes To Life “Putri Santubong The Warrior Princess” tells the story of the greatness and glory of an empire under the reign of Putri Santubong who built civilisations in Nusantara.

“This is an attempt to unlock a different dimension of public perception of Putri Santubong as a Warrior Princess rather than the accepted folktale of two princesses fighting over a prince admirer.

“Another emphasis in this staging is also on the lifestyle of the society during that era. Also on display are the lifestyle and economic activities of the Sarawak Malay back then. The staging era dates to the Srivijaya era, thus making this musical drama more vibrant, fun and a most memorable event, creating awareness and interest in the folk legends of Sarawak,” she said during a press conference to officially launch the “Putri Santubong-The Warrior Princess” video trailer, held via Zoom earlier today.

Meanwhile, musical drama’s executive producer Zaini Zainuddin said almost RM1 million has been spent to promote the musical drama to tell the world that Sarawak is now open to everyone after the Covid-19 pandemic, including Malaysia in general.

“The beauty of this musical drama is that we want to promote ‘Bahasa Sarawak’, and it will have subtitles for it.

“Apart from that, we will continue this as there are many stories from ‘orang Sarawak’ that need to be made known to the world, and of course we will get the community in Sarawak such as the Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, Melanau and many others to be involved in the future,” he added.

The Legend Comes To Life “Putri Santubong The Warrior Princess” is organised in line with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Sarawak’s objective to promote homegrown cultural and musical events in its international event calendar.

The musical drama’s official trailer was launched today by Maya Karin and can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCvJxOf-jzI.

The musical drama features seasoned performers Maya Karin (Putri Santubong), Azreal Ismail (Kijang Mas), and Soffi Jikan (Iswaraja), as well as Sarawak’s own Dewi Liana Seriestha (Putri Sejinjang) and Anding Indrawani (Dato Nakhoda) in the main cast.
