Residents refuse to evacuate from flooded longhouse

BETONG: Fourty-eight occupants from Rumah Panjang Rembai in Skrang refused to evacuate despite being advised by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).

According to Bomba’s report, they received an emergency call from longhouse chief Christina Nyabong at 12.10pm today, to inform that her 16-door longhouse was inundated by flood waters.

After the situation was assessed, villagers were told to evacuate as the water level had risen three feet from the ground.

Despite Bomba’s attempts to persuade the villagers to evacuate, the villagers refused to budge, saying it is too far away from their childrenā€™s school.

The distance between the longhouse and SK Lidung is two kilometres.

They were suppose to evacuate to Dewan Rentap in Betong, about 21 kilometers away.

Meanwhile, Bombaā€™s report also stated that their team remained at the location on stand-by in case of emergency.
