Villagers in Baram wade their way through floodwaters to exercise their right to vote

BARAM, Nov 19: Come hell or high water, nothing will dampen the spirit of voters to exercise their right to vote in this 15th General Election (GE15).

This was shown by villagers in Long Bemang who were determined to come out and waded their way through floodwaters to cast their vote in P220 Baram this morning.

According to Miri Bomba chief Ahmad Nizam Sapaiee, Long Bemang was hit by flood since Nov 15, affecting some 530 people from 103 houses.

Today, as at 8.50am, the floodwaters have receded to 1.1 feet.

No evacuation was carried out as villagers are safely sheltered at the upper floor of their longhouses.

Situated in Tutoh Apoh Baram, Long Bemang is a well known flood-prone village and this time, the floods have hit the fifth time this year.

Meanwhile, electricity supply at the longhouses has been disconnected by Sarawak Energy since Nov 15 for safety and to avoid any untoward incidents. — DayakDaily
