Villagers fish out dead body from Kanowit river

KANOWIT, Oct 22: Several villagers at Kampung Hilir here were shocked to find a dead body of an unidentified man floating at the river this morning.

The villagers immediately contacted the Fire and Rescue Department at around 7.16am to retrieve the body, said fire station chief Arahman Chik.

“A team of five firemen together with three police personnel were dispatched to the scene, which took a 20-minute journey by boat,” he added.


The villagers successfully fished the fully clothed body out of the river before handing the victim over to the authorities.

Meanwhile, sources from Kanowit police said initial investigation revealed that the body, which was found about 200 meters from Kampung Hilir, does not have any injuries and it is at a decomposed state.

The deceased, who has short hair and wide forehead, was wearing a dark green t-shirt and blue jeans, with a ‘Shock’ brand wristwatch.

He had tattoos on his right upper shoulder.

“We believe he is in his 30s. At this moment, there are no elements of crime. Police urged members of the public, relatives or friends who know of any missing person who might have fallen into the river over the past two or three days to come forward to assist them in the investigation,” the source said. — DayakDaily
