LONDON, Aug 26: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called on multinational oil and gas company Shell to continue their partnership in venturing into carbon capture and storage (CCS).
He noted that Shell had a long history in the oil and gas (O&G) industry in Sarawak which played a significant role to develop the Stateās economy since oil was first drilled in Miri in 1910.
āSarawakās focus on green and renewable energy would make the energy sector the mainstay of the Stateās economy towards 2030 and beyond.
āThe development of all other sectors was consequent upon the growth of the energy industry,ā he said in his opening address during a meeting with Shell top officials at Shell headquarters here yesterday (Aug 25).
The Premier who is leading a delegation to Sweden, Norway and the United Kingdom flew in here from Oslo the previous evening to wrap up a week-long working visit aimed at studying Swedenās Ombudsman policy, CCS initiative and policy of Norway and the United Kingdom as well as the renewable energy industry of these countries.
Accompanying the Premier were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan who is also Minister for International Trade and Investment Sarawak; Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni; Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki and heads of departments and government-linked corporations (GLCs).
Earlier, the Premier and the entourage were received on arrival at the premises by Shell executive vice president (Conventional Oil and Gas) Peter Costello; Shell executive vice president (Exploration) Marc Gerrits; Country Chair Shell Malaysia, Siti Sulaiman and general manager for Corporate Relations East Malaysia, Jonathan Jolly.
In a separate development during a meeting with officials of the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) earlier in the morning, the Premier said that Sarawak would make the United Kingdom a model in formulating Sarawakās net-zero policy. ā DayakDaily
