Vandalised navigation buoy in Kuala Baram to be fixed ASAP: Transport Minister

KUCHING, June 19: Missing lighting on a buoy in Kuala Baram river mouth will be replaced as soon as possible, assures Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

According to Lee, the navigation buoy, which belongs to Petronas Carigali-SKO Sarawak Operation for the purpose of marking underwater pipeline to ensure safety of navigation, was vandalised, and it compromises the safety of navigation to ships and fishing boats operating around Kuala Baram.

“It has been agreed that the replacement will be put in as soon as possible by the Lembaga Boya dan Api Sarawak (LBAS) with the available spare to be reimbursed by Petronas Carigali-SKO Sarawak Operation in order to make sure ships and fishing boats operating in that area are safe,” he said in a statement today.


Lee said this in reply to a news report on the missing lighting on a buoy in Kuala Baram (Miri) river mouth at the sea front as reported by a local daily on June 18, 2020.

Lee also calls for the cooperation from all commercial ships and fishing boats owners to jointly safeguard the navigation aids to ensure everyone safety.

“In this request, the Ministry of Transport, Sarawak would like to seek the full cooperation of all commercial Ships and fishing boat owners to work together with us by ensuring that Aids to Navigation like Light and Buoys are protected for maritime communities’ safety at all time,” he added.—DayakDaily
