KUCHING, Aug 24: Athletes from Sarawak and Sabah can now enjoy up to 30 per cent discount on Malaysia Airlines flight fares, a move set to ease the financial burden of travelling to Peninsular Malaysia and international tournaments.
According to a TVS news report, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the discount is offered through the airline’s sports product scheme and only requires verification of athlete status before a claim is made.
“If they are confirmed as athletes, they can get up to 30 per cent discount on tickets,” she said when met after officiating a new tennis court at Elopura Ujana in Sandakan yesterday (Aug 23).
In addition, Yeoh said the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) also provides assistance through the Sports Development Fund and Constituency Fund to help ranking athletes cover participation costs.
“Athletes who wish to join competitions can apply for constituency funds for their expenses,” she added.
The Minister also encouraged local sports associations to bid for hosting rights so that more national-level tournaments could be held in Sabah and Sarawak, which would reduce the need for athletes to raise travel funds.
“This step is expected to open more opportunities for participation while reducing financial pressure on athletes in Borneo,” she stressed. — DayakDaily
