Unofficial results see BN retaining Kimanis seat

KUCHING, Jan 18: An unofficial early count shows that Barisan Nasional (BN) managed to retain the Kimanis seat with more than 1,000 majority in the Kimanis by-election polls today.

As of 7.30pm, BN candidate Datuk Mohamad Alamin was reported to be leading by 1,451 votes over Parti Warisan Sabah candidate Datuk Karim Bujang.

As of 7.33pm, Mohamad Alamin was reported to garner 12,414 while Karim Bujang, 10,501.

As the turnout of voters is slightly more than 80 per cent which is around 23,000, Mohamad Alamin is said to have won already as the counted votes show that he has obtained more than 50 per cent support.

The Kimanis parliamentary seat has a total of 29,644 voters.

The seat had been held by Umno strongman and former foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Amin who was re-elected in 2018 general election. However, the federal court declared that it was null and void on the ground of misconduct by the Election Commission.

The Kimanis by-election was called following the Federal Court decision. —DayakDaily
