KUCHING, Sept 7: The unity government is not linked with the High Court’s decision to drop corruption charges against Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
In pointing this out, Senator Abun Sui Anyit, who is also Parti Keadilan Rakyat (Keadilan) Sarawak deputy chairman, said this matter should not be associated with the government due to the separation of powers among the executive, judiciary, and legislative branches.
Abun Sui was responding to former Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin’s questions regarding Zahid being granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) for 47 graft charges related to the Yayasan Akalbudi fund in a podcast recently.
Abun Sui explained that the decision was made before the previous Attorney-General, Tan Sri Datuk Idrus Harun, took his leave because Zahid’s representation letter or his lawyer’s submission had been received earlier in the year.
He further clarified that the representation had been reviewed, a decision had been reached, and the Attorney-General could instruct that the decision be announced to the court during the mention or hearing on Sept 4, when the case was scheduled.
On Sept 5, the Kuala Lumpur High Court granted Zahid a DNAA on all 47 criminal breach of trust (CBT), bribery and money laundering charges. — DayakDaily
