UNIMAS to work closely with victim’s family, authorities after lake tragedy

KUCHING, July 22: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has asserted its commitment to helping the family of the woman who died after the car she was driving veered off the road and plunged into the university’s lake on Monday (July 21).

In a statement issued on its Facebook page, UNIMAS said it would work closely with the victim’s family to ensure that every form of support, assistance, and follow-up would be implemented immediately and efficiently.

UNIMAS also assured that it would give its full cooperation to the authorities in the ongoing investigation.

Expressing its condolences to the victim’s family, the university urged all to respect the privacy of the victim and the family.

“As an institution committed to the well-being of the campus community, UNIMAS is always attentive to safety aspects and ready to extend assistance in order to safeguard the welfare of campus residents and members of the public within the university area,” the statement said.

At the same time, the university also expressed its appreciation to the campus community members who acted swiftly to rescue the victim, reflecting the high values of concern and social responsibility within the UNIMAS community.

On Monday, it was reported that the victim, 50-year-old Nur Shareefah Lusia Abdullah, and her 17-year-old daughter, were in the car when it plunged into the lake.

Both mother and daughter were rescued. While the teenager was safe, the victim was unconscious and rushed to a health facility before passing away. — DayakDaily
