KUCHING, July 20: The establishment of the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) has made Sarawak a model for religious harmony in Malaysia, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He emphasised that UNIFOR is the only organisation of its kind in the country and stands as a clear reflection of the Sarawak government’s deep respect for the State’s religious diversity.
“With sustained support, UNIFOR has cultivated a strong and stable ecosystem of interfaith harmony, making Sarawak a model of unity across Malaysia.
“Through UNIFOR, we will continue to strengthen the infrastructure of religious institutions, ensuring that every citizen enjoys freedom of faith and peace of worship,” he said in a speech text read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during the Sarawak Day 2025 Interfaith Thanksgiving Ceremony, broadcast live by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) via Facebook earlier tonight.
Abang Johari also cautioned that the decline of racial and religious harmony has led to instability in many parts of the world, even resulting in the collapse of nations and communities.
He said many of these conflicts stem from differences that are misunderstood or poorly managed, and stressed that Sarawak must continue to be a beacon of harmony, peace and unity.
“In this context, religious leaders play a crucial role in advancing interfaith dialogue and mutual respect among our diverse communities.
“They are essential partners in building a holistic society—inspiring, educating and advocating for a better future. Their influence is vital in shaping the moral compass of a diversified and thriving Sarawak,” he added.
Also present were Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, who is the minister-in-charge of the Sarawak Day 2025 celebration; Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government I (Public Health and Housing) Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, who oversees the Interfaith Thanksgiving Ceremony; as well as UNIFOR director Georgina Apphia Ngau and her husband Peter Bryan Morrison. – DayakDaily
