SIBU, Oct 24: A private university student here lost RM13,180 after falling for an online part-time work scam.

Sibu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner (ACP) Zukipli Suhaili said the 20-year-old victim was interested in getting a five per cent commission for the work offered.

He said, the victim’s phone number was added to a WhatsApp group named ‘Wealth Wise Event Y12’ on Sunday (Oct 22).

“Immediately the victim was instructed to transfer money to the given bank account and was promised a commission.

“After completing the task and receiving a commission of RM319.56, the suspect instructed the victim to do the next task,” he said.

According to Zulkipli, the victim made four money transfers to three local bank accounts totaling RM13,180 to get the promised commission.

“The victim was then informed that the commission would be credited to his account on the same day.

“However, until the report was made, the victim did not receive the commission and finally realised that he had been cheated,” he explained.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — DayakDaily
