KUCHING, Aug 2: Members of the public were stunned by a distressing sight this morning as numerous lifeless pigeons were discovered, fallen from the trees lining Gambier Street along the Kuching Waterfront this morning.
According to a brief report from Sarawak Edition, a total of 41 avian carcases were collected from the area following this shocking incident.
A eyewitness identified as Wan Sarbini shared with the local social media platform that a significant number of the birds were found dead when he passed the areas at about 8.15 this morning.
Some carcasses scattered beneath the sheltering branches to be in a debilitated state and exhibiting signs of distress such as foaming at the beak.
Responding swiftly, police officers from the Central Police Station and the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) enforcement team cordoned off the area with barrier tape and restricted public access to the scene.
Additional information from Sarawak Edition revealed that four officers from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) Forensics Unit hastened to the location.
Their purpose was to gather samples from the deceased birds, which would undergo laboratory testing to ascertain the cause of death.
In a statement, SFC disclosed that all collected samples are domesticated pigeons which are not listed as protected species under Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998 and are commonly domesticated.
“Our team managed to collect all specimens to assist in further investigation. SFC is currently investigating the cause of this unfortunate event on-site. We will collaborate with the relevant local authorities concerned to gather more information and data,” SFC disclosed. — DayakDaily
