Unborn child dies after mother injured in Bau-Lundu crash

BAU, Jan 8: An unborn child at 35 weeks and two days gestation tragically died after the mother sustained internal injuries in a collision at KM5 of Opar/Rumih junction along Jalan Bau-Lundu yesterday (Jan 7).

Bau District Police chief Dr Daram Ruer, in a statement today, confirmed that the fetal death was reported at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

“The accident occurred around 5.30pm when a 4WD vehicle, exiting to the right at a junction towards Bau, collided with a Perodua Bezza driven by the pregnant woman, who was travelling straight,” he said.

As a result of the collision, the woman suffered internal injuries, leading to the loss of her unborn child. She is currently receiving treatment in the hospital’s emergency unit.

Daram added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Police are urging witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation by contacting the nearest police station.

Daram also reminded motorists to exercise caution while driving, particularly during unpredictable weather conditions. He emphasised the importance of ensuring vehicles are in good condition and practicing courteous driving to prevent accidents. — DayakDaily
