KUCHING, May 27: State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has announced the implementation of a 14-day Movement Control Order (MCO) for the whole of Sarawak effective May 29 until June 11.
He said this decision took into account the constantly rising number of Covid-19 cases due to poor compliance with standard operating procedures (SOP) despite the previous Conditional MCO (CMCO) for months which later led to what he termed to be “critical situations in health facilities”.
“Sarawak has been implementing CMCO with SOPs that was further tightened since May 12, but still, the number of Covid-19 cases are still on the rise and most clusters that erupted lately were due to poor compliance with these SOP especially during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.
“Taking into consideration the worsening situation of Covid-19 in Sarawak, the critical situation in health facilities, and the emergence of new variants (VOC) detected in Sarawak recently, we need to take more drastic actions to control the Covid-19 infection now before the situation gets worse.
“With this, SDMC has decided to declare the execution of MCO throughout Sarawak from May 29 until June 11, 2021,” he said in a press conference on Covid-19 update today.
Adding on, he said the new set of SOP would be available on the National Security Council (MKN)’s official website starting tomorrow (May 28).
Uggah, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, emphasised that movement restrictions that will be implemented during these few weeks would be vital to help reduce the number of Covid-19 infections in Sarawak. — DayakDaily
