Two soldiers detained over fatal incident at Kem Sri Miri

MIRI, March 26: Police have arrested two soldiers on suspicion of involvement in the death of a 21-year-old serviceman at Kem Sri Miri.

Miri Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed that the two suspects, both holding the rank of private, were arrested at Camp Sri Miri at approximately 4.30pm yesterday (March 25).

The suspects, aged 22 and 24, have been remanded for seven days until April 2 to assist in the investigations.

“This case is currently under police investigation and is being treated as a murder case under Section 302 of the Penal Code,” said Alexson. He also urged the public to refrain from speculation regarding the incident.

The victim, Private Muhammad Muqriz Aseri of the 20th Battalion, Royal Malay Regiment (20 RAMD), was found dead at the military camp on March 24.

A post-mortem conducted at Miri Hospital determined the cause of death as blunt trauma to the chest (contusio cordis), indicating a severe impact that resulted in heart damage.

Following the autopsy, the deceased’s remains were flown to Kuala Lumpur and laid to rest at the Al-Islamiah Mosque Cemetery, Kampung Lindungan, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, at 11.55pm on March 25.
