KUCHING, July 15: Two local men were arrested in the act of cutting telecommunication cables in a manhole on Jalan Sultan Iskandar, Bintulu, early yesterday morning.

Bintulu District Police Chief, Superintendent Nixon Joshua Ali, stated the incident occurred at about 2.10am when both suspects were spotted behaving suspiciously by the telecommunication company’s security patrolling the area who subsequently contacted the police.

“Among the items seized from the suspects’ possession were 16 pieces of cable of various sizes, a chain block unit, a ladder and a hacksaw.

“Upon reviewing the records of both the suspects, we found that both had cases that were related to theft and drug addiction,” he said in a statement as reported by TVS yesterday.

He said both suspects were remanded at the Bintulu Magistrate’s Court and are being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

“An initial screening of the suspects’ urine indicated positive results for methamphetamine/amphetamine that will add further charges.

“The police do not compromise on any individual or group that commits such criminal acts. Our collaboration with telecommunication companies is a continuous effort in curbing cable theft,” he said.
