KUCHING, Oct 9: Two men were caught red-handed yesterday (Oct 8) while attempting to cut Telekom Malaysia (TM) underground cables at the junction of Jalan Cerdas, Wisma Persekutuan.
Miri District Police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the suspects, aged 41 and 28, were apprehended at around 11.20pm by the police while on patrol after officers noticed their suspicious activity.
“Upon inspection, police found the suspects preparing to cut the underground TM cables using a chain block and pliers,” he said in a statement.
He added that the suspects’ modus operandi involved targeting quiet, poorly lit areas late at night to steal underground cables.
Both suspects are currently in police custody and will be brought to court today for a remand application to facilitate investigation under Section 379/511 of the Penal Code for attempted theft.
ACP Farhan emphasised that the police remain committed to tackling criminal activities, particularly cable theft, which results in substantial losses and public inconvenience.
He also urged members of the public to come forward with any information related to such crimes to assist police investigations. — DayakDaily
