KUCHING, Aug 17: Two friends were sentenced four months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court here for obstructing police duties during Op Lejang.
The incident occurred on August 14 when the individuals attempted to evade arrest by speeding in their vehicle in the opposite direction of traffic.
Ariffin Aini, 28, and Muhammad Ridzuan Sam Abdullah, 29, both pleaded guilty to the charges read jointly before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.
According to the charges, they were jointly accused under Section 186 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Code.
If found guilty, they faced a prison term of up to two years, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both.
The incident took place in the early hours of August 14, around 2am near along Jalan Lapangan Terbang.
Ariffin was also charged in the Sessions Court. Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi ordered Ariffin on a good behavior bond for two years, and a bail of RM8,000 without deposit along with a local surety.
This came after Ariffin admitted to possessing a dangerous weapon without a legitimate purpose.
He was charged under Section 6(1) of the Dangerous Drugs, Explosives and Weapons Act 1958 for possessing a sharp-edged knife used for cutting meat inside the vehicle during the incident.
The prosecution was separately handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Danial Mohamad Ali and Prosecuting Officer Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad. — DayakDaily
