KUCHING, March 13: Two local men, aged approximately 31 and 32, tragically lost their lives in a fatal road accident involving a motorcycle and sports utility vehicle (SUV) at Jalan Astana here last night.
According to reports by the Kuching District Police Headquarters, the accident occurred at approximately 11pm. Preliminary investigations found that the accident occurred when a motorcycle traveling straight on Jalan Astana collided with a car that was turning into the intersection at Lorong 5, Jalan Astana.
“The rider and pillion passenger of the motorcycle, both local men aged around 31 and 32 years, one was pronounced dead at the scene (pillion passenger, 31 years old) while the other was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at the emergency unit of Sarawak General Hospital (rider, 32 years old).
“The car driver, a local man, did not suffer any injuries and has been detained to assist with the investigation,” said Kuching police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah.
The case is being investigated under section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, and if convicted, the offender could be sentenced to imprisonment for a period of not less than five years and not more than ten years, and a fine of not less than twenty thousand ringgit and not more than fifty thousand ringgit.

“Road users are advised to always practice prudent driving and adhere to the established traffic regulations to avoid endangering other road users,” Mohd Farhan added. – DayakDaily
