Trial begins for 17, 19yo youths charged with assault involving weapons at Tabuan Jaya coffeeshop

KUCHING, Nov 16: Two young men, aged 17 and 19, are now facing trial in different courts in connection with a serious assault case involving dangerous weapons.

Sia, aged 19, was charged under Section 7(1)(a) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 for possessing one sword and two units of parang in front of a house in Kampung Landeh Batu Padawan, at about 4.50pm on Nov 9.


He pleaded not guilty to the charge framed before Sessions Court Judge Musli Abdul Hamid.

Judge Musli fixed Dec 15 for pre-trial case management, and the trial date is set for April 23 and 24, 2024.

Sia was released on bail of RM10,000 with one local surety and ordered to report to the nearest police station every month.

In another Magistrate’s Court, Sia and Liong, aged 17, were charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt to a 19-year-old victim in front of a coffeeshop at Tabuan Jaya, at about 11.50pm on Nov 6.

The charge was read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries imprisonment up to one year, or a fine up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Baraya fixed Dec 19, for pre-trial case management and released them on bail of RM1,000 with one local surety each.

They were arrested by the police on Nov 9.

The assault occurred on Nov 6, around 11.50pm in front of a coffeeshop in Tabuan Jaya.

The 19-year-old male complainant was attacked by the husband of his friend, one of the accused, along with several other men who used rattan sticks, iron, glass bottles, and chairs.

The altercation originated from the complainant taking the accused’s wife out for a meal.

Before the incident, the accused’s wife had contacted the complainant, expressing her hunger and requesting him to bring or buy food for her.

During the altercation, the complainant sustained head injuries, received medical treatment at KPJ Hospital, and filed a police report for further action.
