MIRI, March 9: Minister of Transport Sarawak Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin has urged Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and Petros (Petroleum Sarawak Berhad) to emulate Shell Malaysia by setting up its upstream office in Miri as there is still potential for oil fields to be discovered in Miri.

He described Shell Malaysia’s decision of relocating its upstream office to Miri at the end of 2023 as an appropriate move to further develop this division.

“We are excited with the decision (to relocate Shell Malaysia upstream office in Miri), giving the fact that the first oil well was discovered dated back in 1910 at Canada Hill.

“I called on Petronas and even Petros to do like wise, because there are still a lot of offshore and land explorations going on in Miri.

“If all oil and gas companies come to Miri, no doubt this division will be the hub for oil and gas industry and Miri will continue to grow and achieve our Miri Greater Plan,” said Lee.

On Tuesday, Shell Malaysia Upstream via a statement confirmed the relocation of its office to Miri Times Square.

The new building is scheduled to be ready for occupancy by end of 2023.

Lee who is Senadin assemblyman said the relocating of offices to Miri would help develop Miri further and he was optimistic that it would propel the city’s economy.

Lee was met after officiating two-day legal engagement programme with 50 Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) enforcement officers who came from different parts of Sarawak.
Also present were Deputy Transport Minister Dato Henry Harry Jinep, Principal assistant secretary of the Transport Ministry (MOTS) Rozita Kulai who was representing MOTS’s permanent secretary Dato Buckland Bangik and SRB Assistant controller Leonard Luhat Laing. — DayakDaily
