MIRI, April 15: The Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MoTS) has called on road users to be extra vigilant and prioritise safety while on the road this festive season.

Its minister, Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin said road users should always practice safety first and foremost, not for the sake of enforcement agencies such as traffic police or the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

“When you put on your seat belt, you should do it for your own safety and not because there are policemen or JPJ in front,” he told local media on Saturday in Miri after distributing goodies to motorists during a road safety campaign held in conjunction with the coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

“Our goal (the road safety campaign) is to reduce accidents and fatalities, as we aim to educate and promote safe driving behavior with hope to see a decreasing pattern in the number of road accidents each year,” he said.

“That is why MoTS is planning to revive traffic games in Sarawak to help develop and inculcate road safety rules in school children, as teaching them from a young age is very important in the long run,” Lee said.

At the moment, he added, the Ministry is looking at upgrading six traffic parks across the region to organise traffic games.

Meanwhile, the number of road accidents this year in Miri Division for the period of January until April increased 15.7 per cent or 975 cases as compared to 842 in 2022. — DayakDaily
