MIRI, Dec 8: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin has put forward the idea of introducing a Smart Bus Transportation system in Miri city to address traffic congestion in its busiest areas and enhance public transportation.

Lee revealed this proposal while speaking to local reporters today after distributing 23 safety helmets and Christmas goodies to motorists during the annual Road Safety campaign at a petrol station in Permyjaya.

“We will delve into the establishment of a Smart Bus Transportation here, and I am optimistic that by next year, my ministry could initiate further discussions with public bus companies for the implementation of the Smart Bus System, similar to what has been successfully executed in Kuching,” Lee conveyed to the local media.

He emphasised that the proposed system would not only alleviate traffic congestion but also contribute to the improvement of public transportation in Miri city, encouraging residents to opt for public buses for their convenience.

Meanwhile, statistics from the Miri Division police indicated a slight decrease in the number of road accidents during the Christmas road safety campaign for the years 2021 and 2022. In 2022, a total of 106 cases were recorded, showing a decrease from 115 cases in 2021. — DayakDaily
