JOHOR BAHRU, Jan 15: Many are unaware that in Norway’s long-term financial governance, when a baby is born, they automatically become a millionaire due to the country’s excellent financial management.

Inspired by this model, Sarawak is now strengthening its global position with the ambition to become the ‘Norway of the East,’ a vision championed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, shared that Norway was chosen as a model due to its world-renowned financial management and robust sovereign wealth fund system.

He explained that Sarawak has already begun adopting this system as a key strategy for sustainable economic growth.

“The question is, why Norway? If we examine it closely, Norway’s environment, including its population size, somewhat resembles Sarawak.

“That’s why, when Sarawak decided to establish a sovereign wealth fund, we used Norway as our reference model,” he said during an interview with TVS at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre today.

Abdul Karim added that with this bold vision, Sarawak is on the right path to achieving developed status and setting an example for other regions in Malaysia, aligning with its goal to be recognised as the ‘Norway of the East.’

He also emphasised that Abang Johari’s strategy not only drives economic growth but also enhances the overall well-being of Sarawakians.

Recently, Abang Johari reaffirmed his aspiration for Sarawak to become the ‘Norway of the East,’ highlighting that Sarawak would draw inspiration from Scandinavian countries such as Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Denmark, particularly in economic development and resource management. — DayakDaily
