KUCHING, Feb 20: Newly appointed Dewan Negara president Senator Datuk Mutang Tagal will be able to handle his new role easily, said Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP) Sarawak Minister, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Due to Mutang’s extensive legal background, Abdul Karim believes that he will have a smooth transition into the Dewan Negara as its president.

“I know he has laid off from politics for a long time, but he has the kind of background that will fit well as the Senate President,” Abdul Karim added.

Despite the clamorous environment of the Dewan Rakyat, he is certain that Mutang would be able to administer it without much difficulty.

“It is an honour to the Dayak community,” said Abdul Karim referring to Mutang’s position as the first Dayak to be appointed to the position.

Mutang was born on Oct 5, 1954, in Lawas, Sarawak, and is of Lun Bawang descent. He possesses a Bachelor of Law from the University of Malaya (UM) and a Masters in Business Administration from Curtin University.

He was a former parliament member for Bukit Mas (now known as Lawas) for two terms from 1982 to 1990 and is the incumbent president of Orang Ulu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OUCCI). — DayakDaily
