SIBU, June 4: China’s Xiamen Airlines is still conducting studies on the possibility of establishing direct flights from Fuzhou to Sibu, says Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Malaysia Dato Sri Tiong King Sing.

In a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) news report today, he said that his ministry expressed its intention to have more flights from China to the country, especially Sarawak, and requested Xiamen Airlines to establish direct flights to Sibu.

“There is already a route from Yunnan to Kuching. However, I have requested direct flights to Sibu, including Bintulu.

“I suggested to them the possibility of using the Airbus A320 (or Boeing) 737-900. They came to conduct a study, but it (direct flight to Sibu) is not confirmed yet,” he said.

The Bintulu MP said this to reporters during his ministry’s Gawai Dayak programme with the Bawang Assan community at Rumah Catherine Tamoh, Sungai Aup, yesterday (June 3).

Meanwhile, during his speech at the programme, Tiong, who is also Dudong assemblyman, said there are discussions on direct flights to Kuching from China, as well as other countries, such as those in Central Asia.

At the same time, he urged Sarawakians to work together to attract more tourists to their respective areas. — DayakDaily
