KUCHING, March 4: The 275/132 kV (kilovolt) Tondong substation in Bau will be the first to be equipped with the advanced Static Synchronous Compensator (Statcom) in Sarawak.
Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi said it would provide dynamic voltage support to the main State grid and thus enhance the overall grid’s supply reliability, especially for Kuching Grid System.
“The Statcom facility is expected to be commissioned by December this year,” he said during his visit to the site yesterday (March 3).
The substation authorised under Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) was safely commissioned on February 18 as an integral part of the future 500kV transmission backbone.
It is currently in its final phase of transmission line works.
Once completed, it will strengthen the power supply to Kuching to meet rapidly growing local electricity demand and accommodate future capacity growth.
Also present were MUT Deputy Minister (Utility) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Transport Deputy Minister (Riverine and Marine) and Tasik Biru assemblyman Dato Henry Harry Jinep, MUT’s Electricity Supply director Syed Mohamad Fauzi Shahab, and SEB group chief executive officer Datu Sharbini Suhaili. — DayakDaily
