SIBU, Sept 27: The decades old Tiong Hua Road market has been closed on September 26 until further notice.
Sibu Municipal Council (SMC)’s Market and Petty Traders chairman Albert Tiang said the market is closed due to structural cracks on its wall.
The structural cracks started to appear on September 17 and the cracks had become more apparent now.
“The  market is closed but the hawkers are allowed to trade at the side using canopy,” he said.
The council, he said would ask the Public Works Department to assess the structural worthiness of the building.
“In the meantime, SMC will find alternatives for the food stalls on the first floor,” he added.
The market has about 34 traders where the ground floor is the wet section. The upper floor houses the food stalls.
It was built five decades ago at the area which is prone to flood.-DayakDaily
