KUCHING, Nov 1: Fifth Form student Tiong Chiong Kian of SMK Pending was awarded the Best Science Stream Student in the school’s 2019 Student Excellence Award.

The 17-year-old, who is a student head boy, shared that he wants to pursue higher education in the field of biology or medicine upon graduation.

“I hope to get straight A’s in all the subjects that I will sit for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or make sure I passed it all,” he told reporters after the award presentation ceremony which was officiated by Bandar Kuching MP Kelvin Yii today.

Tiong emphasised that hard work, discipline and teachers’ guidance were necessary to achieve good grades.

“I learn and listen in classes as well as study on my own consistently. This is also what I did for my term examinations. I also attend tuition to do better in Chemistry, English and Bahasa Malaysia.

“I have to reject or practice self-control over all kinds of temptations like electronic games that would distract my focus on my studies. Priority is on my studies and time management is also important,” he said.

The only child whose parents are both teachers added that they were very supportive and given him the freedom to choose his future’s career.

His mother Jong Pit Choo, who was present to see his son received the award, said she and her husband were proud of his son’s achievement.

“We let him study on his own and he often does his work with me on the same table as I do my school work.

“I hoped that he can take care of himself. Let him be what he wants to be and to do well for himself,” she said.— DayakDaily
