MIRI, 6 Nov: Piasau incumbent Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew who is also Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) secretary-general says that he will defending his seat in the coming Sarawak State 12th Election.
“The party (SUPP) has made its decision for me to defend the seat in this coming State Election,” he disclosed on Saturday in Miri.
The party central committee has also decided to field six other candidates to retain seats that had been won (by SUPP) in the 11th State Election.
Meanwhile, Ting remained coy on the possibility of more than a one-corner contest for the Piasau seat in this coming election.
On the Piasau SUPP election machinery, Ting added that they have been activated.
“For this election, I believed there would be new approaches based on guildelines set up by the Election Commission (EC),” he said, adding that Melaka’s election guidelines might apply to Sarawak as well.
“We have to learn from the Melaka election and I believe that if the standard operating procedures (SOPs) are applicable (for the State Election) than EC may impose the same guidelines,” he explained.
Meanwhile, in responding to a query of his chances to retain the seat this coming election, Ting said he would leave it to the voters to decide his fate.
“I’ll let them decide and judge my performance based on what I’ve done for my area (Piasau),” he said.
In 11th State Election in 2016, Ting won the Piasau seat from DAP (Alan Ling) with a 2,112 vote majority.
Ting garnered 7,799 votes while Alan Ling polled 5,687 votes.
