Three repeat offenders arrested for drug offences in separate incidents

KUCHING, Nov 3: Recent arrests of repeat offenders have exposed the shocking scourge of drug abuse and alarming accessibility of drugs among youths.

On the afternoon of Nov 2, the police arrested two suspicious men loitering along the road side of Kampung Sin-Sin at Jalan Astana.

A body search yielded nothing but the two men tested positive for methamphetamine. Both of them, aged 34 and 37, have been arrested for similar offences before.


In a separate incident, police arrested a 23-year-old man near the old State Legislative Assembly Building and found 37 plastic sachets containing a total of 504 Nospan pills inside his bag.

The suspect had been arrested three times previously for the same offence since 2015.

All three suspects have been detained to facilitate investigation under Section15 (1) (1) of 1952 Dangerous Drug Act which carries punishment of two years’ jail and/or RM5,000 fine upon conviction. They are also being investigated under Section 30 (3) 1952 Poison Act which carries punishment of four years’ imprisonment and/or RM10,000 fine upon conviction.

In a press statement, state narcotics chief Supt Sahar Abdul Latif said that the department had conducted eight operations at Kampung Sin-Sin and arrested 15 people. They were arrested for various offences under the Dangerous Drug Act and Poison Act and the drugs seized totaled 21.44 grammes of Syabu, 97 Erimin 5 pills, and 10 Nospan pills.

In 2017, 15 operations were conducted and 32 people were arrested for similar offences involving a total of 82.28 grammes of Syabu, 0.53 grammes of marijuana and one Erimin 5 pill.

He thanked members of the public for tipping the police and urged more people to cooperate to combat this serious issue. — DayakDaily
