Three Indonesians charged with possessing IS material

MIRI, Oct 2: Three Indonesians including a married couple were charged in the Sessions Court here today, with possession of items related to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.

All of them nodded when the charges were read out to them before judge Steve Ritikos but no plea was taken.

The three individuals arrived at court around 9am this morning heavily escorted by the anti-terrorism police personnel.

They were accused of possessing items related to IS on Sept 14, 2019. The items were allegedly found in their respective handphones.

The three suspects were detained in three separate locations at 2.25pm, 4.10pm and 4.45pm respectively, during an operation carried out on Sept 14, this year.

One of the suspects was picked up at a Pan Borneo Highway construction site at Jalan Bintulu-Miri. The female suspect was picked up at an oil palm estate office in Bintulu, while her husband was apprehended at the workers’ quarters.

They were charged under Section 130JB (1)(a) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum seven years’ jail or fine and possible forfeiture of the items, if convicted.

The court fixed Dec 3 for mention.
