KUCHING, Sept 9: A Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) staff has reportedly received a threatening message from an Indonesian phone number, warning of an attempt to torch liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Malaysia.

In a TVS news report, Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof said the message contained specific demands, with the sender threatening to carry out the act if no response was given.

“The message was sent via a phone number registered in Indonesia, but the sender’s true identity is still under police investigation.

“As a precautionary measure, the National Security Council (NSC) has issued a directive to tighten security controls, particularly to ensure no untoward incidents occur,” he told reporters after launching Malaysia’s National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security in Kuala Lumpur today.

NSC, in a statement on Monday night (Sept 8), stressed that it views the threat seriously and has taken proactive steps to safeguard national interests.

It added that all LNG facilities nationwide, including those in Bintulu, have been instructed to heighten security while police investigations continue.

The council also urged the public not to speculate on the matter, assuring that updates will be provided as the situation develops. — DayakDaily
