KUCHING, Jan 1: Thousands of people gathered at the Kuching South City Commission (MBKS) square to celebrate New Year’s Eve and count down to 2020 despite rainy conditions.

The celebration kicked off earlier in the evening with performances featuring Malaysian artistes Eric Lim Kien Fei, Adelynna Yang Tze Wee, Faye An Ying Fei, Teo Eng San, Nicole Kho, Julisha Jeraie and Joseph, Vic Teo and Kuching-born Rynn Lim.

Local groups KinAte and The Spectacular also performed Korean pop-inspired dance.

The crowd gathered at MBKS headquarters for the new year countdown.

Performances were paused at 11.59pm for the countdown to the new year led by MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, several Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) leaders and community leaders.

At the stroke of midnight, everyone shouted ‘Happy New Year’ and cheered. This was followed by a fireworks display which unfolded without a hitch, leaving all in awe.

Throughout the day, security personnel were at the scene to ensure crowd safety and smooth flow of traffic.
