KUCHING, June 6: A 44-year-old man was sentenced to three years in prison by the Sessions Court here today after pleading guilty to assaulting his wife during a domestic dispute.
Tang Cheng Chong, a father of five, admitted to injuring his wife with a stainless-steel thermos cup during an altercation at their residence along Jalan Sejingkat on June 1, around 10am.
Judge Musli Ab Hamid handed down the sentence under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which deals with voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means, read together with Section 326A, which provides for enhanced penalties in domestic violence cases.
According to the facts presented in court, the incident occurred after a heated argument between the couple. Tang’s drink had been accidentally spilt when his wife threw a piece of clothing in his direction, unintentionally knocking over the cup.
In response, Tang struck her on the right cheek with the thermos, causing a cut and significant pain.
The victim later filed a police report, leading to Tang’s arrest on June 2.
Section 324 of the Penal Code allows for imprisonment for up to ten years, a fine, or both. However, due to the offence taking place within a domestic setting, Section 326A permits a sentence of up to double the usual punishment.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Umi Syukriah Harun prosecuted the case, while Tang appeared in court without legal representation. — DayakDaily
