SIBU, May 28: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting hopes that more entertainment, cultural or sporting events will be organised in the future so as to enliven the town.

Speaking after attending ‘The Stage’ talent show event at the Rajang Esplanade last night, Ting said the council would also like to see non-signature events taking place.

The town’s signature events include the Borneo Cultural Festival, Sibu International Dance Festival, and Sibu Base Jump.

“What I need from all of us in Sibu is to organise more events so that we will not always think of going outside to see this sort of things,” he said.

Likewise, he said the council would let event organisers use its facilities.

Ting added that having events all year round would help promote the town.

He praised Bukit Assek assemblyman, Joseph Chieng for taking the initiative to organise ‘The Stage’ to cultivate young talent and to provide them with a platform to showcase their performances.

Meanwhile, Chieng said the Rajang Esplanade, which was built in 1988 has come back to life with the organising of the programme.

The esplanade was brightly lit with 22 food stalls to attract the crowds during the event last night.

As many as 15 groups of performers will be showcasing their talents during the two-day event, which began on May 27.

“As you know, Rajang Esplanade has been quiet for the last 10 to 20 years and it is also very unfortunate that it is underutilised. So, with the assistance and support from the council, we have upgraded this area to host the programme tonight,” Chieng said.

He added that in there are plans to utilise the entirety of Rajang Esplanade to accommodate more stalls and host more programmes in the future. — DayakDaily
