SIBU, Aug 8: A police officer’s hope of returning to Sibu at the end of this month to spend precious time with his wife and five children was tragically cut short after he died from an electric shock in an incident in Beaufort in Sabah on Thursday (Aug 6).
According to TVS news, Corporal Chiu Teck Siong, 41, is survived by his wife, Tang Wei Wei, 39, and their five children, aged between four and 11. The children last saw their father during the Chinese New Year celebrations earlier this year.
Tang said her late husband had applied for leave to return to Sibu on Aug 27, and the family had been eagerly looking forward to his homecoming.
“He had wanted to transfer back to Sibu for a long time, but his request was unsuccessful. This month, he finally applied for leave to return home. The children have not seen him since Chinese New Year,” she said when met at the Sibu Mortuary Hall on Jalan Bukit Lima last night (Aug 7).
She said her greatest concern now was the future of their five children’s education, as her income as a private-sector employee was insufficient following the loss of the family’s main breadwinner.
She appealed to the government, elected representatives, and other parties for financial assistance and moral support to help the family cope during this difficult time.
Tang said Chiu, who had served at Beaufort for more than 11 years since his first posting as a police officer, had long hoped to be transferred back to Sibu but was unable to do so.
“We have five children aged four, six, seven, 10 and 11. Four of them are studying at SJK(C) Tiong Hin, while the youngest attends Tadika Sing Ang Tong,” she said.
The late officer’s remains arrived at Sibu Airport at 5.50pm before being transported to the Sibu Mortuary Hall at Jalan Bukit Lima.
A final tribute ceremony will be held at Nirvana Memorial Park at 7.30am today before the funeral arrangements continue according to the family’s wishes.
Chiu was among three police officers killed, suspected of having been electrocuted while picking coconuts in front of Weston Police Station in Kampung Weston, Beaufort on Thursday afternoon.
The two other police officer who also lost their lives were Lance Corporal Mohamad Nur Hafiz Ibrahim, 29, and Lance Corporal Muhammad Raimi Ismarubee, 26. — DayakDaily
