KUCHING, Jan 6: Motorists are cautioned not to use the Pan Borneo Highway from Telok Melano to Sematan, which was completed on Friday (Jan 4), as it is not open to the public yet.

In a statement today, the state Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Transportation said that stretch of 32.77km road had yet to be gazetted as a federal highway.

“The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Transportation is pleased to inform that the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway stretch from Telok Melano to Sematan has achieved practical completion by the contractor on Jan 4.

“However, the new 32.77km road is not yet open to the public for use until the federal government, through the Kementerian Kerja Raya Malaysia, gazettes it as a federal highway.

“As anxious as all Sarawakians are about the new road to Telok Melano, members of the public are cautioned not to travel on the said road yet until it is gazetted,” said the ministry.

It added that only authorised vehicles were allowed to use the road at this point in time.

“The authorities have been alerted to take action against vehicles trespassing the road until it is gazetted and officially opened to the public in the near future.

“We seek the cooperation of the public in this matter,” said the ministry. — DayakDaily
