Teenager found dead, another missing after being swept away by strong currents in Meluan River

JULAU, Oct 1: A teenage boy was found dead while his friend is still missing after both of them were swept away by strong currents in Meluan River near Brooke Fort, Nanga Meluan here today.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Rezan Abdul Jalil, 15, while the missing boy was identified as Ferdinand Raymond Jiram, 16.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in a report said that a team from Bintangor Fire Station (BBP) was despatched to the location after receiving a call regarding the incident from Julau Police Station at 3.50pm.


“According to a witness Jiram Janting who is Ferdinand’s father, they were bathing and swimming in the river.

“It was believed that Abdul Rezan was trying to cross the river but failed and was swept away. This prompted Ferdinand to rescue his friend but he too, was swept away,” the Bomba report said.

Abdul Rezan’s body was found by the search and rescue (SAR) team around 5.45pm about 20 metres away from the location he was last seen.

The operation was paused at 6pm and will continue tomorrow. — DayakDaily
