Teen suspect arrested for allegedly stealing from surau’s collection box

KUCHING, Nov 4: An unemployed teenager was arrested for allegedly stealing money from the donation box of a surau near Taman Won Baru Jalan Matang today.

According to Kuching District Police Chief ACP Awang Din Awang Gani, this is the third similar incident of missing money from the donation box.

“The 18-year-old was seen entering the surau in a suspicious manner through the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.

The suspect entered the surau through the main door before breaking the donation box padlock.

Police managed to arrest the suspect a day after a report was lodged.

“A check also found that the suspect had two criminal records under Sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code for gang and armed robbery,” Awang Din disclosed.

The suspect has been remanded and the case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code which provides imprisonment up to 10 years and a fine if convicted.

Meanwhile, Awang Din advised all worship places to take extra precautionary and safety measures by not leaving the place unattended.

He pointed out that the installation of CCTV is also important to assist police investigation in tracking down culprits. — DayakDaily
