SIBU, Nov 4: There was pin-drop silence and a sombre mood as the family of murdered university student Irene Chung walked out from the VIP room on their arrival at the Sibu Airport this evening.

The couple had flown in here from Taipei with transits in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and the Kuching International Airport before flying in here.

On hand to receive them at the airport were members of Sibu Hakka Association which led by its adviser, Kapitan Connie Loh, members of Wesley Methodist Church and a political secretary to the Chief Minister, Michael Tiang.

Irene’s father Desmond Chung was the former chairman of the association. After their flight touched down at 6.10pm the family underwent another swab test.

The first one was at KLIA. Her parents, Desmond Chung and Ting Ching Ping were all dressed in black attire.

Ting could be heard weeping as they walked out. Their elder son, Daniel followed behind bearing the urn which contained Irene’s ashes.

The other son, Davis walked behind Daniel. The family did not talk to anybody and were immediately taken to a waiting car which proceeded to Nirvana Memorial Park for them to place the urn bearing the ashes of Irene at the columbarium.

The family’s lawyer, Yap Hoi Liong said the family would like to thank the State Disaster Management Committee headed by Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah for granting them a special five-day funeral service at Nirvana Memorial Park.

“After the funeral service, they will observe the 14-day quarantine period at their home,” he said.

Yap added that the church funeral service will take place at a date to be decided soon.

“They will also hold a press conference after that,” he said.

The couple had flown to Taiwan on Oct 30 following news of her death.
