KUCHING, May 3: The state government has allocated a disaster aid of RM250,000 for Kampung Sungan in Tebedu, Serian, for the construction of a gabion wall as a landslide mitigation measure.

Serian Resident Jonathan Lugoh handed over the cheque to Kampung Sungan village chief Jebenis Kulat, which was witnessed by Minister of Education, Science and Technology Research Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong at a brief ceremony in the latter’s office in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex today.

According to Jonathan, the project would be undertaken by the Public Works Department (PWD) and was expected to be completed within this year.

The PWD Serian Division visited the site on Feb 18 following an embankment landslide at the back of a longhouse in Kampung Sungan that pulled down a unit of the 12-door longhouse four days earlier.

The embankment landslide occurred due to a heavy rainfall, which caused the water level to increase and coupled with heavy water flow that affected the structure of the unit belonging to Loney Singen.

PWD Serian Divison inspected the site and found out that the location of the unit was too near to slope of the embankment, which was deemed dangerous and unsafe for occupation. — DayakDaily
