KUCHING, July 23: A male teacher at a private school in Sibu became RM89,000 poorer after falling for an online investment scam.
According to Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri, the victim made a police report on July 21 after realising he had been cheated.
“The victim met a woman known as Jooyee Yap Jia through the ‘Tantan’ application.
“A few days after the introduction, the suspect invited the victim to make a gold investment, where the suspect promised a profit of approximately 18 per cent of the total investment capital,” said Mohd Azman in a statement today.
The victim was then asked to download the ‘bfmdtrade’ application before the suspect asked the victim to deposit payments into several bank accounts.
He said the victim made 18 transfer transactions totaling RM89,000 to 11 different bank accounts between the end of April 2023 and the end of May 2023.
“The victim realised he was cheated after not receiving any return from the investment and failing to contact the suspect,” said Mohd Azman. — DayakDaily
