KANOWIT, April 9: Police are on the hunt for a suspect for allegedly spreading fake news that a teacher here is a Covid-19 positive patient.

Kanowit district police chief Deputy superintendent Tega Bilong revealed the police are investigating the case following a police report lodged by the 55-year old teacher from Taman Muhibah Indah.

At about 11am on April 8, the complainant received a WhatsApp message from his cousin informing him that a member of a WhatsApp group who used the nickname ‘CG Jaya’ had accused him of contracting the disease after entering Samarahan which is a Covid-19 red zone.

The suspect had also mentioned that the complainant had also attended a funeral in Taman Muhibbah which was the second time he had contracted the virus.

“The complainant had refuted the allegation made by the suspect as untrue as he had all the while stayed at home since the enforcement of the MCO (movement control order) on March 18,” Tega explained, adding the complainant had also provided evidence that he had tested negative for Covid-19.

“He had done a test on April 7 at Kanowit Hospital. At 10am today (April 9), the hospital authority delivered the result to his house which showed that he is Covid-19 negative.”

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Multimedia and Communication Act and Section 500 of the Penal Code. — DayakDaily
