KUCHING, April 6: Tatau has been placed under the management of Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) as a strategic step to address the issue of high housing prices in Bintulu.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg says this was part of efforts to expand development and balance the high demand for housing in Bintulu.

“Currently, even a one-bedroom unit costs RM1,000 in rent. That’s why we are opening new areas to match supply and demand and ensure that house prices are reasonable. Therefore, we are opening new areas up to Tatau,” he shared during his speech at the Bintulu Development Authority Aidilfitri 2025 Open House Event today.

However, he pointed out that while the inclusion of Tatau under BDA’s management could solve the issue of land availability, it is equally important to have modern construction technology that could help reduce housing construction costs.

“Let us open new approaches, and hopefully, the cost of living in Bintulu can be reduced, especially in terms of house rentals,” Abang Johari added.

Also present at the event were the Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development of Sarawak, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai, Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, BDA general manager Datu Muhamad Yakup Kari, BDA deputy chairman Dato Haidar Khan Asghar Khan, Bintulu Resident Datu Nyerak Keti, and other distinguished guests. – DayakDaily
