KUCHING, Oct 6: The Jalan Sebuku upgrading project, spanning from the Bau District Police Headquarters to the Tondong Bridge to enhance road safety and improve driving comfort for users in the area, is estimated to cost RM40 million.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) report, Sarawak Deputy Minister of Transport (Riverine and Marine) and Tasik Biru assemblyman, Dato Henry Harry Jinep, said that since the completion of the Tondong Bridge, Jalan Sebuku has become the primary route for residents travelling to Kuching and Bau town.
However, he noted that the existing road has become increasingly narrow and less safe due to the rising volume of traffic.
“A wider road needs to be built to prevent flooding, reduce traffic congestion—especially during peak hours when students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bau are returning home—and to ensure that the Sebuku area is not left behind in the region’s development progress.
“This is in our planning, and the expenditure may reach RM40 million due to the rising cost, and this also takes time,” he said at the opening of the Mooncake Festival organised by the Sebuku Area Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) at the Sebuku Area Chung Hua Sebuku School Hall, Bau on Sunday (Oct 5).
Henry also announced that, while waiting for the project to be implemented, he would use existing funds to improve the roads in the area.
Meanwhile, for the paving of roads to residents’ homes, the matter would be brought to the Bau District Council for further action.
In addition, the construction of new halls for community use in the Sebuku and Taiton areas is also a priority.
He said that efforts to build new roads in the Taiton area are being actively carried out to enable the connection of clean water and electricity supplies and to facilitate the construction of the hall.
In the meantime, he called on the residents of the Sebuku area to provide a suitable site for the construction of the hall and not to object to the Sebuku road upgrading project when approved by the government. — DayakDaily
