KUCHING, May 18: Sarawak is a pioneer in Malaysia by tabling the Land Code (Amendment) Bill, 2022, which proposes to align the definition of “land” with that in other Malaysian legislation such as the National Land Code.

Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang (GPS-PRS) said the Bill, which was tabled in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today, would create history for the many generations of Sarawakians to come.

Other than giving the Sarawak government wider jurisdiction to generate more income, he said the proposed amendments in the Bill serve to protect and preserve Sarawak’s rights over its resources and land.

“The amendment of this Bill will create the development of new industries and the evolution of current industries. It also can provide a basic structure for what the future technologies and businesses bring.

“For the people of Sarawak, it can create high income jobs and other opportunities surrounding it. But most importantly, the Bill can ensure that Sarawak’s rights continue to be protected,” said Gira when debating in favour of the Land Code (Amendment) Bill, 2022 at the DUN complex here today.

The Bill was tabled by Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.

The amendment if passed, would make Sarawak the first in Malaysia to have legislation to enable industries, including oil and gas, operating in Sarawak to comply with international requirements, and to reduce carbon emission intensity under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). — DayakDaily
