KUCHING, March 22: Should a casino be built in Sarawak, it could help boost its tourism industry, says Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang.

Agreeing with Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah’s statement that a properly regulated casino could boost tourism and offer more jobs in Sarawak, Gira is hopeful that the Sarawak government will consider the idea.

“I did mentioned this in 2017. I totally agree with Abdul Karim,” he said in a statement today.

On July 23, 2017, Gira had proposed that the government set up a theme park and casino in Tutoh to boost Sarawak’s tourism industry when officiating at the Borneo Dayak Cultural Festival in Sibu.

He took Singapore as an example, as the island country is an attractive tourism destination with its casinos at Resort World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands.

Earlier today at DayakDaily’s D’Drift launch, Abdul Karim said there was a possibility of redeveloping the Borneo Highlands Resort in Padawan in that direction, though he did not advocate the idea of a casino, and it had not been officially discussed by the Sarawak government.

“Although I will not advocate for that, I am open to the idea because a casino can be a spark for many others like what is happening at Genting Highlands Resort in Pahang. It is up to our Sarawak government to decide,” Abdul Karim added. — DayakDaily
